They’re designed principally as indoor log storage to sit alongside a wood burner or open fire, but the powder-coated steel construction copes perfectly well with a sheltered outdoor spot such as a porch, covered terrace or garden room. If you want one to live fully exposed to British weather year-round, tell us at the point of order and we’ll specify the finish accordingly. Our tall industrial log store measures 35cm wide by 35cm deep and comes in 120cm or 180cm heights, which holds roughly a week to a fortnight of logs for a regularly used wood burner – enough that you’re not making a trip to the woodpile every evening. The taller version also includes a separate kindling compartment, so kindling and firelighters are stored with the logs rather than scattered around the hearth. Steel doesn’t split, sag, shed or absorb moisture, which is where baskets and timber stores fail. Bark, grit and insects fall through rather than collecting in a weave you can’t clean, sharp log ends don’t tear anything, and a welded steel frame will still be square in twenty years. Visually it also does something a basket can’t: a tall, narrow steel log store draws the eye upwards beside a chimney breast and reads as part of the room’s design rather than as storage that’s been tolerated. It’s the same reasoning behind all our handmade furniture.
Yes – alcoves either side of a chimney breast are one of the most common bespoke requests, and standard sizes almost never fit them. Send us the width, depth and height of the recess, allowing a small tolerance for skirting and out-of-square walls, and we’ll build to suit. We can also match a pair for symmetry, move the kindling compartment, or build low and wide for under a window rather than tall and narrow. An open steel frame with mesh sides is about the best thing you can store logs in, because airflow is what keeps firewood dry – a sealed cupboard traps moisture and encourages mould. Stack logs with their cut ends facing outwards and don’t pack them so tightly that air can’t move between them. Bring wood indoors a few days before burning so it acclimatises; well-seasoned hardwood below 20% moisture burns hotter, produces less smoke and keeps your flue considerably cleaner. The same wood works well on our outdoor fire pits.
Every log store is powder-coated to order, with up to six colours available on the tall industrial log store and four on the open design. Matt black is the usual choice next to a black stove because it reads as one considered scheme rather than two competing objects, but brushed steel suits a lighter, more contemporary room and a custom RAL colour can be matched to existing ironwork, a kitchen or a paint palette.
