A handmade table is built from solid timber and welded steel rather than veneered board and flat-pack fittings – the difference between a piece that loosens within a few years and one that’s still in the family in fifty. Ours are made individually in Devon from locally sourced oak, so the grain, colour and knot pattern belong to your table alone. There’s also a practical argument: a solid top can be sanded and re-oiled repeatedly, so wear becomes patina rather than damage. Yes, and it’s the most common reason people come to us. Awkward rooms, kitchen islands, narrow hallways and period properties rarely suit standard sizing, so we build to your measurements – length, width, top thickness, height, edge profile, timber and frame colour. We start with a free design consultation, in person at our South Devon workshop or online, and provide drawings and specifications before any steel is cut. Mostly solid English oak, sourced locally to our Devon workshop, alongside walnut and occasional rare timbers such as the London plane used in our console table when a piece calls for something unusual. Knots are resin-filled rather than cut out, which keeps the character of the board intact and the surface flat. Very little is needed. Wipe spills promptly rather than letting them sit, use mats under anything hot, and re-oil the top once or twice a year with a hardwax or Danish oil – more often on a table in daily family use. Powder-coated steel needs nothing beyond a damp cloth. Avoid standing the table in direct sunlight or hard against a radiator, as both dry the timber unevenly. Light marks can be sanded back and re-oiled, a repair a veneered table simply doesn’t allow. Our solid English oak round table is also fitted with adjustable feet to remove any wobble on uneven floors.
Console and side tables do the most work in tight spaces because they give you surface without eating floor area. A slim console suits a hallway or behind a sofa, geo-style end tables sit neatly beside an armchair, and nesting side tables give you two or three surfaces that tuck away to one footprint. Yes – UK delivery is free, and pieces are dispatched within 24-48 hours of completion. Smaller tables arrive ready to use. Larger dining tables usually travel as a top and frame for safe transit, with the frame pre-drilled and fixings supplied, so assembly is a screwdriver job rather than a project. Tell us at the enquiry stage if access is tight – narrow stairs, a lift, a listed doorway – and we’ll design the piece so it can physically get into the room it’s destined for.
